Azerbaijan’s parliament poll ‘generally free and fair’
BAKU – GUAM, a group of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, has said Azerbaijan’s parliamentary election held Sunday was generally free and fair.
"Azerbaijan’s parliamentary election complied with international standards and standards of democratic elections, as well as [the country’s] commitments to the OSCE and the Council of Europe, national legislation, and the regulations and procedures defined by the Central Election Commission," GUAM’s election observation mission said in a statement.
The mission said the election was held in a low-key environment and did not cite any major shortfalls over the overall electoral process, the conduct of the elections and the work of electoral commissions.
Parliament members were elected for a five-year term under the majority of votes. The ruling Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP) has gained 72 seats in the 125-member Milli Majlis, according to preliminary tallies.
