Top Azeri official cites shortfalls in OSCE pre-election report
BAKU – Azerbaijani Presidential Administration chief Ramiz Mehdiyev has termed as generally positive the report of the OSCE observation mission monitoring Azerbaijan's parliamentary elections despite "some erroneousness".
The OSCE’s second interim report cited some violations of law in the run-up to Sunday’s elections.
Mehdiyev said further that the government has provided suitable conditions for a democratic vote and ensured equal rivalry among election candidates. 500 Web cameras installed in ballot stations will ensure transparency during the polling. Unbiased media coverage will also contribute to the democratic conduct of the elections, Mehdiyev said.
The Presidential Administration head said election practices applied in Azerbaijan will further improve the electoral process and thus contribute to its democratization.
"This is a new success of Azerbaijani democracy," Mehdiyev added.
Voters will elect 125 members of parliament for a five-year term, under the majority of votes with one round of voting. The number of registered voters is approximately 4.8 million in the country of 9 million people.
