Azeri party leader’s son convicted in Russia on fraud charges

BAKU – An Azerbaijani party leader’s son has been convicted in the Russian city of Chelyabinsk to eight years in prison on charges of money laundering and fraud.

Etimad Ismayilov, the son of pro-opposition Justice Party chairman Ilyas Ismayilov, is the owner of Eurasia Industries and Finance Group LLC. The company is owed $1 million by a firm that is said to be patronized by the governor of Chelyabinsk province. A court of arbitration has issued a document confirming the outstanding debt. Ismayilov claimed that his arrest had been ordered by that company so that it would not have to repay the amount.

Ismayilov was apprehended in March 2008.

His attorney, Vladimir Filichkin, has said the defense will appeal the ruling.
