Azerbaijan to spend heavily on foreign policy in 2011
BAKU – The Azerbaijani government plans to allocate 100 million manats ($125 million) to maintain the country’s diplomatic missions abroad and support its foreign policies in 2011, a senior lawmaker has said.
Samad Seyidov, who chairs the parliamentary committee on international relations and inter-parliamentary ties, said $63.75m of the amount will be spent to maintain diplomatic representations. Another $42.5m will finance functions in other countries, while nearly $19m will be allotted for minor activities aiming to bolster Azerbaijan’s image on the world stage.
Azerbaijan currently runs 66 embassies and consulates abroad.
"Despite the world financial crisis, Azerbaijan is not shutting down its embassies but is even opening new ones," Seyidov added.
