Azeri opposition parties postpone protest

BAKU – Two Azerbaijani opposition parties have decided to postpone for a week their rally scheduled for Sunday.

The Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA) and Musavat said in a statement that the decision was due to the Central Election Commission’s considering the rally as campaigning for the November 7 parliamentary elections.

CEC chairman Mazahir Panahov has reminded that pre-election campaigns begin on October 15, therefore, holding a rally five days ahead would be a violation of law.

PFPA and Musavat protesters plan to demand ensuring freedom of assembly, lifting alleged restrictions on free speech in the country and divulging the ongoing talks with Armenia on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.
