Aliyev: War is not over

BAKU – Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has warned that the war with Armenia has not ended yet, saying peace was possible only after it has pulled its troops from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

"[Only] the first stage of the war has ended. The war will be over when a peace accord is signed. And a peace accord could be concluded only once all of Azerbaijan’s occupied lands have been returned and Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity has been restored," President Aliyev said at the opening of a new school building in the Nakhchivan autonomous republic on Tuesday.

Aliyev added that Azerbaijan’s defense spending equals Armenia’s entire state budget and this trend will be maintained.

Armenia has had territorial claims against Azerbaijan, a South Caucasus neighbor, since the early 1990s. The country’s armed forces have been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory, defying international law. Azerbaijani officials have repeatedly warned that the country’s land will be freed at any cost.
