NATO sees Azerbaijan as ‘credible partner’
BAKU – Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov held talks with the NATO Deputy Secretary General Claudio Bisogniero at the alliance’s headquarters on Friday, the NATO website said.
Mammadyarov had a meeting at the North Atlantic Council to discuss his country’s cooperation with NATO, domestic reforms in the framework of the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) and regional security issues.
During the discussions, NATO allies recognized Azerbaijan as a credible and committed partner to the alliance. They thanked Azerbaijan for the support for NATO’s mission in Afghanistan with troops, overflight rights and civilian reconstruction.
The allies also appreciated the broad range of cooperation developed within IPAP and Azerbaijan’s contribution to the discussions on NATO’s new Strategic Concept, to be adopted at the upcoming Lisbon Summit.
Such consultations between Azerbaijan and NATO take place once a year. The second stage of IPAP, covering the period 2008-2010, is currently being implemented.
