Most asylum-seekers claim Armenian nationality
Most Azerbaijanis seeking political asylum abroad change their
first and family names and present themselves as Armenians, an
official says.
Chairman of the State Committee on Work with Azerbaijanis Living Abroad Nazim Ibrahimov told journalists that in doing so, these persons claim that they are facing pressure in Azerbaijan due to their nationality for the sake of their personal gains.
"This is even better that people betraying their state and nation do not return to Azerbaijan," he said.
Ibrahimov added that investigation was under way to crack down on those traveling abroad with forged documents, and most of them are eventually deported from the countries of their destination.
