Plane from Baku lands in Yerevan

24 September 2010 09:18 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – A plane carrying a group of musicians from CIS countries flew from Baku to Yerevan on Thursday.

A source at the Zvartnots airport has confirmed the Rossiya (Russia) Airlines flight to Radio Liberty’s Armenian Service.

There have been no direct flights between the two South Caucasus republics for decades due to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Rarely, foreign diplomats fly from Baku to Yerevan.

On Wednesday, the State Philharmonic Hall of Baku hosted a concert of CIS Youth Symphonic Orchestra led by Vladimir Spivakov, head of the Moscow International House of Music. The event took place as part of the international music festival dedicated to prominent Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibayov’s 125th anniversary.

The concert was attended by Mikhail Shvydkoy, Russian President’s special envoy for international cultural cooperation, former Armenian ambassador to Russia Armen Smbatian, who acts as executive director of the CIS Intergovernmental Humanitarian Cooperation Foundation, and Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia Polad Bulbuloghlu.

The musicians, who arrived in Yerevan from Baku, will deliver a concert in the Armenian capital.
