Separatists’ bid on int’l group entry blocked

18 September 2010 08:41 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU – The International Association of Prosecutors has removed from its agenda a bid by the "prosecutor general" of the self-proclaimed Nagorno Karabakh Republic to become the association's member, following strong protests from Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani Justice Ministry said.

The Azerbaijani delegation had distributed numerous documents and resolutions of the UN, OSCE, Council of Europe and the EU on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict among members of the Executive Committee, the association’s governing body. It also provided extensive information about Azerbaijan’s position on the Karabakh dispute.

"As a result, a decision was made that complies with our national interests," the ministry said.

The Hague hosted the 15th annual conference of the International Association of Prosecutors from September 4-10. General meetings and meetings of the Executive Committee were attended by over 400 representatives from around the world, including top prosecutors, judges and other law-enforcement officers.

Azerbaijan has long been cooperating with the International Association of Prosecutors, which brings together more than 100 countries, and is represented in its Executive Committee.

Nagorno Karabakh is an Azerbaijani region under Armenian occupation where ethnic Armenians are running a self-proclaimed republic.
