US defense chief urges “to step up efforts to prevent Karabakh war escalation”
BAKU – U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates told his Russian counterpart Anatoly Serdyukov that it needs "to step up efforts to prevent use of force" by Armenia and Azerbaijan in the rebel Nagorno Karabakh region.
"The sides held short discussions over the recent confrontation between the Azerbaijani and Armenian forces in the frontline. U.S. Defense Secretary focused attention on the prevention of use of force in Nagorno Karabakh", Pentagon official was quoted by ITAR-TASS news agency as saying following the meeting between the two defense ministers.
The Pentagon official said the top defense officials discussed wide range of issues on the Caucasus.
"Gates emphasized the importance of ceasefire agreement between Russia and Georgia in 2008 and called on Russia to secure transparency of the armed forces in the region".
