Azerbaijan repels Armenian attack; three reported killed

BAKU – Armenian armed forces have staged two attacks on Azerbaijani positions on the contact line of the two countries’ troops. Casualties are reported on both sides.

The offensive, committed near a village of Azerbaijan’s frontline Terter region in the morning and evening hours on Tuesday, was repelled by Azerbaijan’s military, the Baku-based ANS TV channel reported.

Armenian media reported that one Armenian soldier was wounded in the skirmish. But ANS TV said the opposing side had lost at least three servicemen and several others were wounded.

The Azerbaijani side reportedly sustained casualties during the shooting as well.

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry has not yet issued a statement about the skirmish.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict for two decades. Armenia has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory since the early 1990s. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but efforts by international mediators have been largely fruitless so far, and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.
