Azeri, Russian leaders to sign border deal (UPDATED)
BAKU – Russian and Azerbaijani presidents will sign a border delimitation deal during President Dmitry Medvedev’s upcoming visit to Baku, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Azerbaijani media.
Medvedev’s official visit to Azerbaijan is due September 2-3, the Kremlin said.
"The main point on the agenda of the forthcoming visit will be signing the agreement on state borders and the agreement on rational use of water resources of the Samur River," Lavrov said.
He said the leaders of the two countries have been working hard on the document in past years. The agreement was finalized during last year's meeting between Medvedev and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku.
Lavrov praised Azerbaijan as "our important strategic ally in the South Caucasus and in the Caspian region."
"Our relations are on the rise. They are multi-faceted, so the whole range of these relations is traditionally discussed at meetings between the two leaders. I'm sure this meeting will not be an exception," he added.
The parties are also expected to discuss economic cooperation issues during the talks in Baku.
"The trade turnover between the two countries, which has decreased due to the world financial crisis, has begun to rise again," Lavrov said. "There are good investment projects that are being successfully implemented in the fields of industries, transport and banking. The presidents will look into the state of things in these areas and, if necessary, will give them a political incentive."
