UN set to mull resolution on Karabakh: source
BAKU – A resolution called "The situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan" may be discussed at the United Nations General Assembly meeting on September 9, a UN source told the Baku-based APA news agency.
Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Karabakh for two decades. Armenia has been occupying over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally recognized territory since the early 1990s. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but efforts by international mediators have been largely fruitless so far.
"Libya, as a representative country which is chairing the UN GA’s 64th Assembly, has proposed to schedule a debate on Azerbaijan’s resolution as well as on Kosovo and other issues on the same day. A final decision will be made soon," the source said.
Azerbaijan’s resolution has been on the UN GA agenda for many years.
The Sept. 9 debate will clarify the positions of UN member countries on the long-standing conflict.
For the first time an EU ambassador will attend the session as an observer.
