Russia seizes Azeri poachers in the Caspian
MOSCOW - Russian coast guard has detained a poaching vessel sailing under the Azerbaijani flag in the Caspian Sea. The vessel was carrying large quantities of sturgeon fish and black caviar, Russian state news agency ITAR-TASS quoted the country’s Federal Security Service as saying.
A coast guard vessel on Tuesday discovered an unidentified ship in the Caspian, with three high-speed motorboats standing by. When the Stavropol vessel approached, two of the boats attempted to escape pursuit, but were soon detained.
When the detained fishing vessel, Khazar, with eight crew on board being Azerbaijani citizens, was searched, 80 sturgeon fish weighing about two tons and eight kg of sturgeon caviar were impounded.
According to Azerbaijan’s state-run Caspian Shipping Company (CSC), the detained vessel has no bearing on the company. It said the CSC has no fishing vessels, and all vessels engaged in fishing in the Caspian are owned by different private companies.
