Azeris to back Putin-endorsed election hopeful
Azerbaijanis living in Russia have decided to cast their votes at
the upcoming presidential elections in the neighboring country to
Dmitri Medvedev recently endorsed by Russian President Vladimir
Putin.
The announcement was made at a meeting of the All-Russia Congress of Azerbaijanis held in the capital Moscow last Wednesday. Its president, representative of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and member of the Russian Public Chamber, Mammad Aliyev, said the attitude toward the congress has changed for the better and the relations among nations considerably improved during Putin's presidency.
The fact that among a variety of Diaspora organizations operating in Russia, Aliyev has been elected to represent the chamber indicates that the Azerbaijani community has considerable influence in the largest former Soviet republic, which is home to many ethnic groups.
