Another Azeri soldier killed on frontline

26 July 2010 16:56 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU - A serviceman of Azerbaijan’s armed forces has been killed on the frontline with Armenia, in another ceasefire violation by Armenian troops.

Suleyman Ismayilov, 19, was severely wounded after Armenian forces opened fire near a village in Azerbaijan’s Goranboy region, the Baku-based ANS TV channel reported.

According to Nabi Ismayilov, the soldier’s father, he received a phone call from the military unit last Friday and was informed that his son had been wounded. Suleyman passed away on Sunday.

Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s, which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about one million Azerbaijanis. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan’s territory since then. The ceasefire accord was signed in 1994, but peace talks have been largely fruitless so far, and sporadic clashes on the frontline continue.*
