EU may step up Garabagh settlement efforts – envoy
The European Union may play a more active role in settling the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh to deepen its relations with the regional states, the EU’s special envoy for South Caucasus Peter Semneby has said.
"But the EU cannot replace the [mediating] OSCE Minsk Group, it can only give support to this institution," he told a press conference on the outcomes of his visit to Baku on Thursday. "I believe that there is work to be done to build mutual confidence between the sides. Perhaps, we could be useful in doing so. We will look into ways and means of the EU’s facilitating the conflict settlement."
Semneby said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s upcoming visit to the region will play a role in the ongoing peace talks.
"I am confident that the U.S., as a co-chair of the Minsk Group, will capitalize on the Secretary of State’s visit to move the negotiating process forward," the EU envoy said.*
