Azerbaijan, Iran mull defense co-op
The governments of Azerbaijan and Iran have discussed defense
cooperation, Iranian IRNA news agency reported.
Relevant issues were tabled in a meeting of Azerbaijani Defense Minister Safar Abiyev with his Iranian counterpart Mustafa Mohammad Najjar during the former's visit to the neighboring country that started on Monday.
The two ministers also focused on bilateral relations and situation in the region.
Najjar said forces seeking to heighten tension in the region were trying to bring about an exacerbation of conflicts. "This issue is one of our enemies' strategic priorities."
The Iranian defense chief said regional states should step up vigilance to ensure security in the region. "Neighboring countries should be watchful to avoid any tension that could undermine regional security."
Najjar said Iran supported peaceful and good neighborliness relations with Azerbaijan. He said that in general, Tehran was doing everything in its power to expand its ties with regional states.
"We will make every effort to restore stability and peace in the region," Najjar added.
Abiyev, for his part, suggested that Azerbaijan and Iran boost defense cooperation. He further invited the Iranian minister to Baku for an official visit, saying it would make a great contribution to closer collaboration and bolstering regional stability. "Baku backs maintaining stability in the region as well. Azerbaijan will therefore never allow its being pitted against Iran," Abiyev pledged.
