After deadly clash, EU urges to observe Azeri-Armenian ceasefire
The European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, has
expressed concern over the recent deadly clash between Azerbaijani
and Armenian troops on the frontline.
"The High Representative [High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy] regrets the armed incident resulting in the loss of human life that took place during the night between 18-19 June along the Line of Contact in the context of the Nagorno Garabagh conflict," Ashton said in a statement Tuesday.
Azerbaijani and Armenian armed forces clashed last Friday night in the northern part of Azerbaijan's occupied region of Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh. Five troops were reported killed in the fighting. Yerevan said four Armenian soldiers had been killed and four others wounded, while one Azerbaijani soldier was later found dead. Early on Monday, another clash occurred after Armenian troops violated the ceasefire, in which an Azerbaijani serviceman was killed. According to the Azerbaijan Defense Ministry, Azerbaijani armed forces retaliated with rigor, prompting the enemy to sustain casualties and retreat.
Ashton said the High Representative calls on both sides to respect the ceasefire and restrain from the use of force, and continue efforts for the peaceful resolution of the Garabagh conflict.
"The EU reiterates its full support to the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group and the work of the three co-chairs."*
