PACE delegations mull conflict settlement
Azerbaijani and Armenian delegations held a meeting Tuesday on the sidelines of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) summer session to discuss ways of resolving the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict.
The meeting, which took place at the initiative of PACE President Movlud Chavushoglu, was also attended by PACE Secretary General Mateo Sorinas.
The Azerbaijani PACE delegation head, Samad Seyidov, said the sides had reached general agreement to continue holding such meetings.
"The Azerbaijani delegation stressed at the meeting the importance of the PACE subcommittee on Nagorno Garabagh stepping up its work. But, unfortunately, the Armenian side is backing down from such contacts overall, including from communication as part of the subcommittee. Nevertheless, as a result of our persistent position, it was agreed to continue maintaining these ties, hold talks and exchange views, and the Armenian side admitted to the importance of such contacts.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s, which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about one million Azerbaijanis. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territory since then. Peace talks, brokered by the Minsk Group, co-chaired by the United States, Russia and France, have largely accomplished no result so far.*
