Aliyev condemns deadly Israeli attack
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has condemned the
recent Israeli attack on an aid flotilla, in which scores of people
were killed.
"We condemn Israel’s having attacked the Turkish vessel carrying aid to the Gaza Strip, killing civilians, and I would like to express our support to Turkey," President Aliyev told a meeting of an Asian security group in Istanbul on Tuesday, Turkey’s Cihan news agency reported.
Israeli troops intercepted the Freedom aid flotilla in neutral waters on May 31, opening fire from helicopters and sending in commandoes. The aid flotilla consisting of six vessels, co-sponsored by a Turkish organization, along with humanitarian cargo, was carrying up to 700 rights defenders from many countries. Nine people – all Turks - were killed, and over 30 people were wounded.
Aliyev voiced condolences to the Turkish government and people on behalf of the Azerbaijani people, saying the two nations have always supported one another.
The Azerbaijani leader noted that regional cooperation facilitates warding off threats.
"The security measures being taken in Asia represent a large part of the security measures being pursued in the world. Cooperating on this issue reduces the existing risks. Terror can’t be good or bad, we condemn all of it. We have to join our efforts to combat terrorism and its consequences."
In his speech, the president also touched on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh.
"Azerbaijan is a victim of the continuing Armenian aggression. The internationally-recognized territories of Azerbaijan have been under the Armenian occupation for almost two decades," Aliyev said, noting that one million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs as a result of this occupation.
Aliyev said Azerbaijan has sustained an ethnic cleansing policy, and there are no indigenous residents in the occupied territories. "All buildings, houses, schools, graves of our ancestors, our mosques and historical heritage have been destroyed in those territories," he said.
"We demand the implementation of decisions and resolutions of international organizations by Armenia," the president added.
