KCA Deutag awards scholarships to Azeri students
International drilling contractor KCA Deutag has awarded six
scholarships to students from the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy in
Baku. The scholarships were granted at an annual KCA Deutag
reception during the Caspian Oil & Gas Show which is currently
taking place in Baku.
The 2010/2011 KCA Deutag scholars are majoring in Drilling Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
"We use this occasion to recognize and reward academic and professional achievements in the drilling industry in Azerbaijan," Johan Harsevoort, Country Manager for KCA Deutag in Azerbaijan, told the awards ceremony.
"This is the twelfth award of the annual KCA Deutag Scholarship Program, which includes a monthly allowance to assist the students to complete their studies, provision of English language training and equipment familiarization and training opportunities."
According to Harsevoort, KCA Deutag has so far awarded a total of 69 scholarships. Today, all of those awarded successfully continue their careers with KCA Deutag and other oil industry companies, including BP. "Many of them are well known as Azerbaijan's young technical leaders," Harsevoort said.
Harsevoort said that last year, KCA Deutag introduced an operational Graduate Development Program to develop the company’s future leaders and support its growth plans. This program consists of a very demanding and intensive five-year program in which the graduate is given exposure to KCA Deutag’s worldwide operations whilst providing supported, accelerated professional development.
Gary Christman, BP’s VP for Drilling & Completion, said the program assists in creating an opportunity for young Azeri engineers "to be an important part of the current and future development of Azerbaijan’s natural resources".
Siyavush Garayev, Chancellor of the Oil Academy, thanked KCA Deutag for this continued support through the scholarship program and investment to other major corporate responsibility projects in Azerbaijan, including renovation of the training facilities at the Oil Academy.
KCA Deutag, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Abbot Group Ltd, is one of the largest international land drilling contractors outside the Americas, and the largest platform drilling contractor in the North Sea. The company also operates a fleet of mobile offshore drilling units. KCA Deutag employs over 8,000 people and operates in over 20 countries worldwide.*
