Armenian lawmakers reject Garabagh ‘independence’ bill

4 June 2010 00:56 (UTC+04:00)
The Armenian parliament’s foreign affairs commission has rejected a draw law on the so-called "independence" of Upper Garabagh, an Azerbaijani region under Armenian occupation where ethnic Armenians are running a self-proclaimed republic.
Two of the lawmakers - representing the opposition Heritage party, which submitted the bill, and the nationalist Dashnaksutyun Party – voted for the bill, while five MPs from the ruling coalition and one independent MP opposed the measure, Armenia Today news portal said.
Heritage further intends to put the draft law on an extraordinary discussion in the legislature.
Ethnic Armenians in Upper Garabagh, backed by Armenia, declared so-called independence in fighting that erupted as the Soviet Union headed towards its 1991 collapse. The Armenians invaded Upper Garabagh and seven surrounding Azeri districts before a cease-fire was declared in 1994. The Armenian armed forces continue occupying a part of Azerbaijani land, despite four UN resolutions calling for their unconditional pullout.*
