Michael Link, a member of the German Bundestag (parliament) visiting Azerbaijan, has said his country backs Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and considers that its conflict with Armenia over Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh must be resolved based on the principles of territorial integrity and sovereignty of states. The statement was made in his meeting with Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku on Monday, according to the ministry.
Link recalled that the European Union unanimously supported Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity in its recently-adopted resolution on the need for an EU Strategy for the South Caucasus.
Mammadyarov said the conflict must be settled on the basis of international law and strictly within Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
Link said Europe attaches special importance to the South Caucasus region, noting that the German parliament adopted a resolution on the region on May 14 last year.
The parties praised the relationship between Azerbaijan and Germany, saying the two countries had great opportunities to expand relations in various fields, including oil and gas.*
