Chair of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova, who is on a working visit to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, met with Chairman of the People’s National Assembly of the Algerian Parliament Ibrahim Boughali, Azernews reports.

Mr. Ibrahim Boughali greeted the Speaker of the Milli Majlis warmly before voicing the gratifying nature of the existing inter-state and inter-parliamentary relations and recalling the visit of President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev to Algeria for the 31st Summit Session of the League of Arab States in November 2022. That visit contributed dramatically to the ongoing deepening of the bilateral bonds, Boughali said.

Also, Ibrahim Boughali recalled his own visit to Azerbaijan in June 2022 to take part in the first conference of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network. He noted that the Algerian legislature was wholly supportive of the Network and always ready to push forward cooperation within its frameworks.

Boughali added that he had met with members of the Algerian community of Azerbaijan, and thanked the host for the fine living conditions afforded to the community. On Azerbaijan's success in making its territory entire again, the Algerian Speaker stressed that his people, too, had experienced similar developments in a certain period of their history and so completely understood the pride the Azerbaijani nation felt about their victory. The Algerians wish the Azerbaijanis peace and stability, Boughali added.

Sahiba Gafarova, in turn, thanked him for the invitation to arrive in Algeria and for the cordial hospitality extended to the Azerbaijani delegation. She spoke about the mutual relations between Azerbaijan and Algeria, stating that the visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Algeria had been a milestone in the advancement of bilateral relations.

She added that the parliaments of Azerbaijan and Algeria cooperate fruitfully and support each other under the roof of international parliamentary organizations. All these serve the cause of peace, security, and solidarity, Sahiba Gafarova said.

She gave detailed information to Boughali about the terrorist attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran on January 27, 2023.

Azerbaijani Parliamentary Speaker also brought to the attention of Chairman of the Algerian People’s National Assembly the activities of the Non-Aligned Movement Parliamentary Network established at the initiative of the Azerbaijani President, and the tasks lying ahead of the Network. The issues that matter for the Network’s institutional sustenance and development are to be discussed at its next conference in Bahrain. The Network is an institution capable of bolstering coordination of joint activities of the member-parliaments and solving the issues of joint concern whilst making certain that our countries’ voices are heard in the international arena, Sahiba Gafarova noted. Also, she praised Algeria’s active contribution to the Network’s endeavors.

Sahiba Gafarova spoke about the glorious victory of Azerbaijan in the 44-day Patriotic War, the new situation in the region after the restoration of territorial integrity, and the rehabilitation and construction work carried out in Azerbaijan's territories liberated from occupation, noting that the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council and other international organizations demanding the liberation of our lands from occupation left on the paper for many years and were not implemented, and that these instruments were implemented at the expense of Azerbaijan's own power. She added that despite Azerbaijan's being the initiator of the normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia and proposing the signing of a peace agreement based on the 5 main principles of international law, Armenia shows a destructive stance in the negotiations and grossly violates the provisions of the tripartite declaration.

At the meeting, other matters of mutual interest were also discussed.

The meeting was also attended by Fazail Ibrahimli, the Deputy Chair of the Milli Majlis, Mahir Abbaszade, the head of the working group for the Azerbaijani-Algerian inter-parliamentary relations, MPs Sabir Rustamkhanli and Javanshir Pashazade, as well as Tural Rzayev, Azerbaijani ambassador to Algeria.
