Press freedom group appeals to Aliyev over jailed journalist
The World Press Freedom Committee has sent an appeal to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev over releasing the jailed journalist Eynulla Fatullayev.
The appeal, signed by the committee chairman, Richard Winfield, requests that the president ensure enforcing the recent ruling issued by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which called for an immediate release of the journalist. The document was co-signed by representatives of the world’s 45 media organizations.
The editor-in-chief of the Russian-language weekly Realny Azerbaijan and Azerbaijani-language daily Gundalik Azerbaijan was sentenced in 2007 to eight-and-a-half years in prison on charges on defamation, incitement of ethnic hatred, threatening with terror and tax evasion. The ECHR claimed it had found Azerbaijan in violation of two articles of the European Convention on Human Rights, which was ratified by Azerbaijan in 2002.*
