Romania keen on Azerbaijan’s closer co-op with NATO
Romania, as NATO’s coordinating embassy in Azerbaijan, is working to foster the country’s rapprochement with the alliance, the Romanian Ambassador in Baku Nikolae Ureche has said.
Addressing a conference marking 16 years of Azerbaijan’s relations with the military bloc in Baku on Tuesday, Ureche said Bucharest was promoting NATO’s active political dialog with Baku.
"We support meeting the objectives outlined in the Individual Partnership Plan (IPAP) signed by NATO and Azerbaijan. We are also cooperating with Azerbaijan on science and energy security issues," the ambassador told the conference, which aimed to discuss NATO’s role in Europe and ensuring the strategic regions’ stability and security.
Ureche said, further, that efforts were being made to increase public awareness about NATO in Azerbaijan.
"A public opinion had shaped throughout the allied republics during the Soviet times about NATO’s being an imperialist military bloc. But, in fact, it is a military-political organization, and its mission changed with the USSR’s collapse," Ureche said.
Ureche emphasized that the Romanian embassy is recieving extensive support from the Azerbaijani government, notably, the foreign ministry, in its work as NATO’s coordinating mission. He added that the embassy was closely cooperating with local NGOs dealing with military issues.
Baku and Brussels have been cooperating within NATO’s Partnership for Peace (PfP) program since 1994. Also, the South Caucasus republic is collaborating with the bloc within IPAP, a partnership plan signed in 2005 that covers improvements in the military field, political and economic reforms, and other areas.*
