Group of gold forgers nabbed in Azerbaijan
The police in Ganja, Azerbaijan’s second largest city, have arrested a group of seven people accused of embezzling large amounts of money by making, selling and pawning forged gold in banks and to citizens, according to the Interior Ministry.
"The members of the organized group, having gilded silver items, deceived citizens by presenting them as 583-degree gold," the ministry said in a statement. "Nearly 2 kg of items resembling gold have been discovered and impounded from the affected citizens."
Investigators have established that a 26-year-old Ganja resident, had conspired with a 37-year-old woman to make forged gold and release it into circulation.
Anar Hasanov, the group’s leader, was running a clandestine workshop in his basement at home where necklaces and bracelets containing silver were being made and gilded.
Gulnar Allahverdiyeva, his accomplice, along with selling the jewelry, drew five more people to the criminal group. Those persons then arranged pawning the forged jewelry to citizens, which brought the group’s members considerable income.
Investigators also found that the outlaws had sent up to 5 kg of forged gold to neighboring Russia with the aid of a woman who is currently being identified.
The forged jewelry is presumed to have also been put on sale in the capital Baku and other regions of the country.*
