Georgia deplores civilian’s death on Azeri border
Georgia has issued a statement contradicting Azerbaijan’s account
of Tuesday’s incident at the two countries’ shared border, which
resulted in the death of a young Georgian.
Georgia’s Foreign Ministry has termed as "a disgrace" what it called the Azerbaijani frontier guards’ shooting dead the Georgian citizen who accidentally crossed the border, demanding that the issue be thoroughly scrutinized and the culprits punished.
"On April 13, 2010 Azerbaijani frontier guards killed Georgian citizen, Ibrahim Gaorgashvili, a 17-year-old resident of the Signag municipality’s Erisimedi village. He had accidentally crossed into the Azerbaijani side of the Georgia-Azerbaijan border while looking for cattle," the ministry claimed in a statement.
The Georgian ministry said the incident was lamentable in the backdrop of the traditional good neighborhood relations between Georgia and Azerbaijan that are based on strategic interests. Tbilisi also voiced confidence that those responsible for the incident would be severely punished owing to the Azerbaijani side’s efforts.
According to Georgia’s Foreign Ministry, deputy minister David Chalagania discussed the issue with the Azerbaijani ambassador Namig Aliyev on Wednesday.
Azerbaijan’s State Border Service said on Wednesday that a group of three persons had been prevented from illegally crossing into Azerbaijan from neighboring Georgia.
The trespassers ignored the frontier guards’ warning and order to stop, and threatened them with cold weapons. The frontier guards had to use weapons, wounding one of the violators. Taking advantage of the complicated relief, all the trespassers managed to escape back to Georgia, the border service said. *
