Azeri FM to visit Germany next week - envoy
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov is scheduled to visit Germany next week, German Ambassador in Baku Peer Stanchina told AssA-Irada Thursday.
According to him, during the visit the parties will explore prospects for developing bilateral relations. The Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict will be in spotlight as well.
"Overall, the entire world community is closely following the process of settling the Upper Garabagh conflict and wants the problem to swiftly find its solution and for this region to develop more rapidly," Stanchina said.
Asked what contribution Germany could make to facilitate Garabagh settlement, the ambassador noted that his country supports a solution with the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group, the current format of peace talks.
"We wouldn’t want for misunderstanding and confusion to emerge by a new mediator’s coming into this shaped-up system. We stand in anticipation so that any given step would not adversely affect the peace process."
Stanchina also said a delegation of the German Bundestag (parliament) and a Bavarian minister are due to visit Azerbaijan next week.
The envoy went on to say that the German-Azerbaijani economic relations, which are presently at the stage of stagnation, will be expanded.
"Stagnation in bilateral trade ties began in 2008-2009 due to the world financial crisis. But I hope that our economic relations will intensify from now onward."
Stanchina said that prior to the economic crisis the German-Azerbaijani annual trade turnover amounted to 2.5 billion euros, and the figure will increase in the coming years, as "Azerbaijan is considered a vital energy exporter for Germany".*
