US vows to appoint Azerbaijan ambassador ‘soon’
The United States will appoint its ambassador to
Azerbaijan soon, US Charge D’Affairs in Baku Donald Lieu has told
reporters, commenting on the long-standing absence of a US envoy in
the country.
Lieu explained delays in the appointment by red tape obstacles, stressing that designating an envoy is a complicated process in the U.S.
"I think a US ambassador will arrive in Azerbaijan soon. The newly-appointed ambassador will be someone possessing extensive diplomatic experience. It is worthwhile waiting for this ambassador’s arrival.
"The absence of a US ambassador in Azerbaijan is not an indication of our relations, but an indication of bureaucratic points in our system," Lieu said.
The diplomat noted that there are other countries in the world that currently lack US envoys. "Those are states representing great importance for us. Undoubtedly, Azerbaijan is among those states," Lieu said, adding that Washington and Baku are maintaining broad relations.
The post of the US ambassador in Baku has been vacant since July 2009.*
