Azeri security officers nab terror plotters
Azerbaijan’s National Security Ministry has detained eight members of a group that masterminded terror attacks on a school and a kindergarten in Baku, the ministry said.
Seven of the detainees nabbed in an operation on March 16, including three women, are Azerbaijani citizens, while the other is a Russian national who chairs Salam, the Baku-based Chechen Society of the Disabled.
Investigators have established that the leader of the criminal group, Azerbaijani citizen Agil Namazov, who is believed to be outside Azerbaijan, had ordered this January to smuggle large amounts of ammunition, explosives and firearms to the country from neighboring Georgia.
One of the suspects has testified that Namazov, his friend of over two years, had repeatedly told him about the plan to pursue Jihad and stage explosions in public places in Azerbaijan, saying some preparations had already been made to perpetrate the terror acts.
The investigation has revealed that the plotters had hidden weapons and explosives in vulnerable facilities, such as the roof of a kindergarten and close to a secondary school courtyard, which indicates their intention to commit ruthless mass killings that would claim the lives of even innocent children, the National Security Ministry said.*
