Romania, Azerbaijan upbeat on closer co-op
Romania’s Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi visiting Baku and
his Azerbaijani counterpart, Elmar Mammadyarov, on Thursday
discussed prospects for expanding bilateral relations and regional
issues, Mammadyarov told a joint news conference following the
talks.
The minister said the inter-governmental commission is working to
broaden relations between the two countries, adding that Romania’s
deputy foreign minister is expected to arrive in Azerbaijan soon to
advance political dialog.
During the discussions, the parties agreed to hold Days of Culture
in both Romania and Azerbaijan and to exchange staff of the two
countries’ diplomacy academies.
Baconschi said the current trade turnover is below the two
countries’ potential, noting that Romania intends to expand its
cooperation with Azerbaijani business circles.
He also said Bucharest is interested in jointly implementing energy
projects.
"Romania, as a member of the European Union, is a supporter of
introducing a free-market system, and in this context, it supports
the Nabucco gas pipeline project and transportation of gas from
Azerbaijan through Georgia on the Black Sea to Romania."
Baconschi said he was quite optimistic on settling the
Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict, Azerbaijan’s
number one problem. "We want the Garabagh conflict to be settled
peacefully, in line with the principles and norms of international
law, and on the condition of the sovereignty, territorial integrity
of countries and inviolability of their borders."
In conclusion, Baconschi invited his Azerbaijani counterpart to
visit Romania.*
