Azerbaijan’s joining nuclear security summit under question mark
Azerbaijan’s participation at the international summit on nuclear security, due in the United States April 12-13, has not been confirmed.
44 countries have been invited to the summit, to be presided by US President Barack Obama at the Washington Convention Center, which chiefly aims to discuss joint efforts in countering the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The leaders of Georgia and Armenia, Azerbaijan’s neighbors in the South Caucasus region, have been invited to the event, however, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s attendance is currently under a question mark.
A number of Azerbaijani analysts presume that this is due to Azerbaijan’s not being involved in the global dialog on nuclear security. As for Armenia, some Soviet-era radio-active components that need to be destroyed remain on its soil. Such components were present in Azerbaijan, as well, but currently Baku and Washington are focusing in their cooperation on global security and anti-terror combat.
Azerbaijani pundits believe President Obama’s initiative is related to his address in Prague a year ago during which he issued a warning about the threat of nuclear terrorism.*
