Nearly a ton of drugs impounded in five years
Azerbaijani customs officers detected 285 drug-related crimes
and removed over 972 kg of narcotics from circulation in 2005-2009,
according to the State Customs Committee.
The impounded drugs included about 162 kg of opium, 509 kg of
hashish, 143 kg of heroin, and 157 kg of marijuana.
329 people were arraigned for drug trafficking in the past five
years, including 191 citizens of Azerbaijan, 86 Iranians, 12
Georgians, 12 Russians, seven Pakistanis, and five citizens of
Nigeria, Ghana and other African countries. Five of those held
accountable were the nationals of Turkey, while four others were
from Uzbekistan, one from Lithuania, and one from Cambodia.
The Committee also reported increasing instances of women being
used as drug traffickers in recent years. Thus, 46 women, or 14
percent of all traffickers, were detained in 2005-2009. *
