Azeri speaker to raise jailed scholar’s case in Iran
Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov is expected to enquire
about an Azerbaijani scholar recently arrested in Iran.
MP Fazil Mustafa, the leader of Azerbaijan’s Great Establishment Party, requested in parliament Friday that the Milli Majlis chairman do everything in his power to ensure the protection of Rashid Aliyev’s rights during his upcoming visit to the neighboring country. Asadov vowed to scrutinize the jailed scholar’s case and to assist in addressing the problem.
Officials have not elaborated on the reasons for the detention of Aliyev, who worked for the National Academy of Sciences Physics Institute. Unofficial reports suggest, however, that the Iranian authorities charged the scholar with having transferred nuclear physics-related data to Azerbaijan.
Fazil Mustafa believes that the actual reason of Aliyev’s apprehension was his refusal to cooperate with the Iranian secret service.*
