Snow blocks traffic, causes blackouts in Azerbaijan
Heavy snowfall in Azerbaijan that began on Thursday night has
made things difficult for the residents. The situation is dire in
the capital Baku, with cars lining up on the streets and passengers
having to walk long distances due to traffic jams.
The Baku airport suspended operation due to the inclement weather,
and both incoming and outgoing flights were temporarily put on hold
since Friday morning. The airport partly resumed operation later in
the day.
The snowfall, which occurred with simultaneous powerful wind, has
also caused interruptions in the movement of trains.
Blackouts hit a number of districts of the capital as a result of a
blizzard, and power supply remains cut off in most of the
settlements outside Baku.
Tanryverdi Mustafayev, the spokesman for the BakiElektrikShebeke
power supply company, explains that a number of ruptures occured on
airial electricity lines. According to him, these problems were
mainly resolved toward the evening, as power supplies were resumed
to 90-92% of Baku’s territory.
The wintry weather has caused severe problems for transportation
and pedestrians. According to the Baku Emergency Medical Care
Station, six people who slipped and fell on the streets have sought
medical aid, with five of them being hospitalized with severe
injuries.
The abrupt change in weather conditions has also paralyzed
infrastructure in northern Azerbaijan, as links with the Guba and
Gusar regions’ mountainous villages have been severed and
electricity is being supplied there with interruptions.
Weather forecasters predicted the cold weather would reach its peak
Friday night and Saturday morning, with temperatures in Baku
measuring -2 C degrees in the afternoon and -2 to -3 C at night,
and the roads will be icy. Wintry weather is expected to last until
Monday.*
