Two officers arrested over military base shooting
Two Azerbaijani military officers have been arrested
over the recent deadly skirmish between soldiers at a military base
that claimed six lives, Prosecutor-General Zakir Garalov has
said.
The detained officers include the deputy chief of a military division and a company commander.
During the armed skirmish that occurred at a Defense Ministry military unit in the western Dashkasan district last Thursday, two soldiers opened fire with submachine guns, killing four soldiers and wounding two others, before shooting each other dead. It was not immediately clear what provoked the incident.
Garalov said the two military officers, having distributed weapons among company soldiers for cleaning, left them unattended, which allowed the soldiers to freely leave the division premises. They also committed other irregularities during the fulfillment of their duties.
The prosecutor-general added that investigation and operations were ongoing to determine and hold accountable others responsible for the incident.*
