Azercell supports business skills contest
The national final of the Skills@Work
Challenge contest took place on Thursday at the
Grand Hotel Europe in Baku with the support of Azerbaijan’s leading
cellular operator Azercell. 100 students from seven vocational
schools participated in the final stage of the contest, in which
they competed to offer the best solution of a business problem put
forth by organizers.
Skills@Work, a project implemented by Junior Achievement Azerbaijan and the British Council, promotes cooperation within vocational education and training sector not only in Britain, but also across southeast Europe. Skills@Work is aimed at encouraging young people to use their skills in enterprising and innovative ways, ultimately expanding their employment opportunities and entrepreneurial flair. This year, the contest was held simultaneously in 18 countries.
In Azerbaijan, arrangements for the contest started in October 2009. During the selection stages, entrepreneurial and teamwork skills of 240 schoolchildren from Baku and the Guba northern district were examined by the organizers. Subsequently, 20 teams proceeded to the finals. The jury panel consisting of business representatives evaluated the proposed ideas on the basis of their feasibility, innovativeness and the teams’ presentation skills. The winning team gained an opportunity to take part in the regional Skills@Work Challenge contest to be held in Belgrade, Serbia on April 21-25.
"It is not a coincidence that Azercell Telecom LLC supported this contest, which opens up broad opportunities for young people," said Ulviyya Hasanzadeh, the head of Azercell’s Corporate Communications and Social Responsibility Unit. "Our company has always spearheaded projects aiming to increase the creative skills of youths and find jobs for them in line with their professional skills."*
