69 Azeris killed in 2009 industrial accidents: official
69 people died and 218 others received injuries of various
severity in 250 industrial accidents that occured in Azerbaijan in
2009, the State Labor Inspectorate estimates.
Nabi Shukurlu, the head of the inspectorate, told reporters on
Wednesday that 32 of those who lost their lives died in
construction accidents. A total of 65 accidents were reported in
the construction sector last year, in which 48 people were injured
as well.
Shukurlu said the accidents reported in the construction sector had
been caused by the employers’ failure to comply with regulations
during construction work, the lack of personal means of protection
for workers or their improper use, as well as inadequate oversight
of the work assigned.*
