Azeri speaker invited to Israel - MP
Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Ogtay Asadov has been invited to
visit Israel, an Azerbaijani lawmaker has said.
Yevda Abramov, the ethnic Jewish MP who chairs the Milli Majlis Azerbaijan-Israel inter-parliamentary friendship group, said that along with the speaker, the Knesset has extended invitations to the members of the friendship group.
Abramov noted that several Azerbaijani MPs have sought membership in the parliamentary group he heads. He did not specify the lawmakers and only said that among them are scholars and businessmen represented in the legislature.
We recall that Lala Abbasova, a representative of the governing Yeni (New) Azerbaijan Party (YAP), turned down membership in the friendship group in 2009 in light of Israel’s operations in Gaza. Instead, Asim Mollazada, the Democratic Reform Party chairman, was admitted to the group.*
