OSCE envoy on Garabagh to visit Azerbaijan March 6
Goran Lennmarker, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s special
representative on the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh
conflict and disputes in Georgia, is due to visit Azerbaijan March
6-7, Lennmarker announced. During the visit, the OSCE PA official
is scheduled to meet with Azerbaijani leaders.
Though Lennmarker’s visit to the region was initially scheduled for January, it has been postponed until after the OSCE PA’s winter session, to be held in Vienna on February 18-19, due to the presidential elections held in Ukraine.
Lennmarker said he intends to hold meetings with the members of the Azerbaijani delegation at the assembly on the sidelines of the session. The Garabagh conflict will be discussed during the meetings.
Touching on Monday’s talks on Garabagh settlement between Presidents Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sarkisian held in Russia's Black Sea resort city of Sochi with the participation of their Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, Lennmarker voiced hope that the conflicting sides will be able to strike a common ground in conclusion of the talks.
"It will be necessary to hold more meetings for an agreement to be signed. However, we are witnessing today the sides’ increasingly drawing closer to each other. Reaching an accord on a conflict settlement is possible this spring," the OSCE PA envoy said.
Azerbaijan and Armenia fought a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a cease-fire in 1994, but Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven other Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law. Despite numerous rounds of OSCE-brokered negotiations, peace talks have been fruitless so far and refugees remain stranded.*
