Minister confirms Azerbaijan helped restore order in Georgia
Interior Minister Ramil Usubov has confirmed that Azerbaijani law enforcers aided their Georgian counterparts in restoring order during recent mass protests in the capital Tbilisi.
"There's nothing surprising about Azerbaijan's assistance to Georgia's Interior Ministry in this regard," he said while commenting on some reports suggesting that the anti-government rallies in the neighboring South Caucasus republic were put down with the aid of Azerbaijan.
The reports cited a telephone conversation between the two countries' ministers. "I currently chair the CIS Interior Ministers Council, therefore, I hold frequent talks with my counterparts," Usubov said. "I am regularly in touch with the interior minister of Georgia, which is Azerbaijan's close neighbor."
Usubov confirmed that his Georgian counterpart had consulted him on breaking up the rally in Tbilisi. He said his country was providing assistance to Georgia in many ways, including combat against illegal armed groups and terror, and the dispersal of riots.
