Azerbaijan’s electoral body says district mayor meddled in local polls
The head of the Naftalan district executive
authority interfered with the electoral process during Azerbaijan’s
municipal elections held last Wednesday, the Central Election
Commission (CEC) has said.
The CEC chairman, Mazahir Panahov, told a news conference Monday that CEC members had been sent to the Naftalan district, 320 km west of the capital Baku, to examine incoming appeals from a Goranboy-Naftalan constituency electoral commission. The CEC representatives had conversations with about 30 electoral commission members, observers and hopefuls. The scrutiny confirmed that Musa Musayev, the head of the Naftalan executive authority, had meddled in the elections, with the CEC’s decision to that end pending.
About 31,000 candidates ran for a total of 15,682 seats in 1,718 local bodies. 16 political parties had joined the election race. The voting was conducted in 4,813 polling stations in 118 constituencies across the country. Some 16,755 of the candidates were nominated by political parties, while 14,073 were independent and 147 nominated by initiative groups. The election was monitored by about 50,000 observers.*
