Armenian soldier kills two fellow servicemen, commits suicide
An Armenian soldier serving in the Armenia-occupied Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh region of Azerbaijan has killed his two fellow servicemen with a submachine gun and then committed suicide.
Armenia’s Aykakan Jamanak newspaper reported that, prior to the incident, the soldier wrote a letter to his parents asking to arrange his transfer to another military unit due to what he called unberable conditions of service.
The spokesman for the self-proclaimed Upper Garabagh republic’s "defense ministry" said a scrutiny was underway, adding that no further information was available at this point.
Upper Garabagh is an historical Azerbaijani territory. Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict over the mountainous region for nearly two decades. OSCE-brokered peace talks kicked off after a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a shaky cease-fire in 1994. Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven adjacent Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law.*
