22 December 2009 23:53 (UTC+04:00)
Azerbaijan is the key and most powerful strategic partner of Russia in the region, and Moscow attaches special importance to boosting its cooperation with Azerbaijan, said the visiting deputy speaker of the Russian Federal Council (upper house of parliament) Svetlana Orlova.
She said friendly relations between Russia and Azerbaijan had long-standing history. Thanks to efforts by the Azerbaijani and Russian presidents, bilateral relationship has expanded even more to reach the level of strategic partnership, she underlined, adding: "We are not only strategic partners, but also close friends."
According to Orlova, high-level reciprocal visits contribute to deepening relationship between the two countries.
Touching upon economic cooperation, she said that in spite of the global financial crisis the volume of economic and trade turnover is increasing.
On the Armenia-Azerbaijan Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh conflict, she noted that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was making scalable efforts to contribute to settling the dispute.
Russia believes that the conflict must be resolved peacefully and on the basis of the principles of international law, she added. "We hope that our efforts in this area will yield positive results."*
