European court to review IDPs’ plea against Armenia
The European Court of Human Rights will review a plea filed by
Azerbaijanis displaced by the armed conflict with Armenia.
Azerbaijan’s citizens, who say their property rights were violated, are demanding compensation, according to Chingiz Asgarov, the Azerbaijani representative at the court.
According to him, the European court’s correspondence with the Azerbaijani government on the case of the six IDPs, who hail from the Armenia-occupied Lachin district, has been completed. The court has decided that the case will be heard by the Grand Chamber.
Armenia and Azerbaijan waged a war in the early 1990s, which claimed some 30,000 lives and displaced about a million Azerbaijanis. Armenia has been occupying over 20% of Azerbaijan’s internationally-recognized territory since then. Armenian armed forces occupied the Lachin district in May 1992, forcing 67,000 local residents from their homes.*
