US Azeris blast Freedom House over rebel region
The Azerbaijani diaspora in the United States has launched an
online campaign against US rights watchdog Freedom House, after the
organization presented the Upper (Nagorno) Garabagh region of
Azerbaijan as both Azerbaijani and Armenian territory on its
Freedom Map.
The Azerbaijani community reminded that Upper Garabagh’s being part of Azerbaijan has been recognized by the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly in relevant resolutions, as well as de jure by the US State Department. The diaspora members noted that, considering Freedom House is funded by the government, it should not contradict the official US stance, urging the rights group to introduce changes to the map and its report on Azerbaijan.
Freedom House is a non-governmental organization but it is 80 percent funded by the US government.
Upper Garabagh is an historical Azerbaijani territory. Armenians were settled there in the early 19th century. Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in conflict over the mountainous region for over a decade. OSCE-brokered peace talks kicked off after a lengthy war that ended with the signing of a shaky cease-fire in 1994. Armenia continues to occupy Upper Garabagh and seven adjacent Azerbaijani districts in defiance of international law.*
