U.S. allots $8m to Garabagh separatists, report says
The United States has allocated $41 million in assistance to
Armenia and $8 million to the self-proclaimed Upper (Nagorno)
Garabagh republic. The aid package for 2010 was approved on
Wednesday by the US Senate and the House of Representatives, both
chambers of US Congress, the Armenian National Committee of America
was quoted as saying by Armenia Today news agency.
The House, the US legislature’s lower chamber, earlier suggested allotting $48m and $10m respectively. However, the Senate sought a $30m allocation for Armenia and ruled out financial assistance to the self-proclaimed republic. The lawmakers ultimately reached agreement on the matter.
20 percent of Azerbaijan’s territory, including Upper Garabagh and seven adjacent districts, has been under Armenian occupation for nearly two decades. Defying international law, the separatist regime in Upper Garabagh declared so-called independence in 1991, which has not been recognized by the world community.*
